A website – if you don’t have one – get one!
The age of print is undoubtedly coming to an end. Newspaper revenue has taken a nose dive in recent years, and with the climate crisis taking the world firmly by the throat, any excuse not to chop down more trees has got to be as relevant as any.
Thankfully, web 2.0 has kicked into sixth gear to fill the gaping vortex and efficiently service that most fundamental of all human qualities:
We are social.
Yep, that’s right - human beings are essentially social animals - creatures with satellite-dish eyes lured into the foreboding night on little more than the promise of friendship, intelligent conversation and a large glass of vodka on ice.
The internet as we all know, is a social hub. It’s like the only bar worth knowing in town. We go there to play darts and mangled games of chess. We go there to unsuccessfully chat-up members of the opposite sex. We go there to mull around like an untrained pack of purple-haired baboons.
The point I am trying to make however, is that we go there.
We go there to talk, to shop, to be educated.
In short, we go there to socialise.
A website may sound like an expensive outlay, especially if you go to the trouble of having something custom made.
But think of it like this – while you can distribute a brochure very effectively to every home in your particular town of residence, a website on the other hand can be beamed into just about any house with a phone or mobile connection. The potential audience is staggering.
We’re talking Europe, the US, Africa, Latin America – even some parts of New Zealand (hard to believe, but true!)
And your website will be there. Lying in wait. Twenty five hours a day, eight days a week.
You can put just about anything on a website. Text, pictures, podcasts, full-motion video, interactive flash presentations, a web-cam feed, a forum…or even a shopping cart!
Who needs a real shop when you can have a website with e-commerce?
No rates to pay, no carpets to clean – and you can work from home in your Felix-the-cat boxer shorts and eat bowls of cornflakes at your desk!
The advantages of a high quality, customised website cannot possibly be overstated.
A site that stands out in a world full of blah. A site with a real point of difference. A site you’ll be proud to show off – perhaps even on your brand new business card!
You need a site that's hosted on a reliable, regularly backed-up server. Something with a large monthly bandwidth quota (your allowable internet traffic) and loads of storage capacity probably wouldn't go amiss either. .
Top it all off with several customisable email accounts and a registered domain name (myaddress.com.au, for example) and you’ll be all set to embrace the enormous, near-limitless potential of the world-wide-web.
The year is 2009 – the time is now! Don’t take a backward step in these times of economic heartache. Be positive. Explore all those untapped markets and business opportunities and get your company out there for everyone to see.
